Our seven favourite fashion friendships

By: @FeliciaT_Mos

The doors to the realm of fashion invincibility for any female star begins with them being snapped by the paparazzi out and about with a top fashion designer and ends with their new creative bestie taking them on as their muse. Here are a few of our favourite fashion friendships over the years that have supplied us with some great fashion moments.

1) Hubert de Givenchy & Audrey Hepburn
Since they met in 1953, they were a match made by the Fashion Gods themselves. Hubert Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn had an intimate friendship that lasted even into old age. Givenchy’s intuitive understanding of Audrey’s petite frame lead to him creating the perfect sophisticated and ladylike look of the late 1950s and early 1960s. While Audrey’s movies served as a great way to raise Givenchy’s profile and visibility, it can be argued that they both helped each other become the icons they are today.

2) Jean Paul Gaultier & Madonna
This is the duo that gave us Madonna’s now iconic cone bra bustier; first worn on her Blonde Ambition Tour.  Jean Paul Gaultier is known for his ability to merge haute couture with pop culture in the most outrageous way – an ability that made it easy for him to team up with a young, bold and fearless Madonna. The 1990’s and 2000’s saw this friendship develop and lead to both making a name in the each other’s industry.

3) Marc Jacobs & Kate Moss
This may be my favourite model meets designer friendship. Kate and Marc are long-time great friends so why not work together? They’re seemingly fun and adventure filled relationship inspired multiple Louis Vuitton collections under Marc’s leadership (I know, I miss him too) which helped to even further catapult Kate’s supermodel status.

4) Karl Lagerfeld & Diane Kruger
The German-born actress met Chanel designer, Karl Lagerfeld, back when she was 16 years-old and modelling. He saw potential in her and this lead to them forming a family-like bond over the years. They even bonded over photos of Karl’s infamously overly-pampered cat, Choupette. Diane’s class is something very few women possess and comes to life every time she rocks any of Karl’s designs on the red carpet.

5) Olivier Rousteing (Balmain) & Rihanna
The always out-going and regularly scantily dressed singer has shared a symbiotic relationship with the young designer for quite some time. Rihanna has worn Olivier’s designs on the red carpet, on stage, shared a few instagram photos together and starred in the slightly disappointing Balmain Spring 2014 campain. Olivier recently revealed that the collection was designed around the singer, which is probably why she looks like perfection in every piece- but then again, when does she not?

6) Christian Louboutin & Blake Lively
Blake and Christian first met when she visited his store and professed her love for the designer while filming in Paris. A few months later they were close friends. Their fashion friendship became apparent after they were snapped by paparazzi riding around Paris on Vespa’s, since then the actress has been seen on the designer’s arm at various events and inspired many of his pieces. Blake Lively realized a dream that nearly every fashion lover still hangs on to: she has a pair of Louboutin’s named after her. Envy, thy name is Felicia.

7) Donatella Versace & Lady Gaga
This is the most recent fashion friendship to come into the spotlight. The singer and fashion designer have been friends for a few years now so it was only a matter of time before they became each other’s muses. Gaga was like a younger version of Donatella for a lot of her early ARTPOP promo, therefore Donatella made Gaga the face of Versace. It was kind of ingenious for them to make use of Gaga’s chameleon shape-shifting ability in the campaign as well as her talent as an artist (“Donatella” from her latest album is my Naomi Campbell strut anthem). The duo grabbed a few headlines but didn’t make the impact we would have expected due to how creative they’ve been in creating attention. However, they are definitely the most popular fashion friends of the past few years.
